HEAR Method

Highlight, Explain, Apply, Respond — a guided journaling pattern

HEAR gives your daily reading a clear shape: mark what stands out, explain it in context, apply it to your life, and respond to God. We will walk through James 1:2–8 so you can see each step, then use it with any passage.

Step 1

H — Highlight

Read James 1:2–8 ↗
  • Read the passage slowly and highlight the verse or phrase that catches your attention.
  • In James 1, you might highlight verse 5 — the promise that God gives wisdom generously to anyone who asks.
  • Write the highlighted verse at the top of your journal page.

Step 2

E — Explain

  • Ask what the verse meant to its first readers: James writes to scattered believers facing trials.
  • Look at the surrounding verses — wisdom is asked for in the middle of testing, not apart from it.
  • Put the meaning into one or two sentences in your own words.

Step 3

A — Apply

  • Ask, “What does this truth mean for me today?”
  • Name one current trial or decision where you need God's wisdom.
  • Write one concrete step: “Before I decide about ___, I will ask God for wisdom and wait on Him.”

Step 4

R — Respond

  • Respond to God in a short written prayer, using the words of the passage.
  • Ask in faith, as verse 6 says, without doubting God's goodness.
  • Share your highlight with a friend or small group this week.
